In a long line of companies courting the Trump administration, SoftBank Group, a Japanese conglomerate, has donated $50 million to President Donald Trump’s presidential library fund.

Recent renderings of the construction plans show Trump’s library will be a skyscraper overlooking the Miami coastline. The building is planned to house the $400 million Qatari-gifted jet for use as Air Force One, along with iconography from Trump’s political endeavors. This includes a golden escalator and a gold statue of Trump holding his fist in the air.

This donation is among the largest made to the fund, which aims to raise hundreds of millions for the project. Other donations have come from tech and media organizations, including X, Meta and Paramount, as well as from lawsuit settlements with Trump.

SoftBank’s donation is intended to support the library’s focus on strengthening the U.S.-Japan alliance, particularly in economic and strategic matters.

This donation did not come out of thin air, though. The company pledged to donate $100 billion to invest in American companies at the beginning of Trump’s second term. SoftBank is one of the leading investors in AI globally, with controlling stakes in several AI companies. The company is also a major lobbyist for AI-related legislation, a large investor in OpenAI, and active on other policy topics.

Masayoshi Son, the company’s founder and chair, has been to the White House several times, dating back to Trump’s first term.

The company had previously made similar, although far smaller, plans for the presidential libraries of Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush after they were constructed.
