Former Vice President Mike Pence declared that President Donald Trump‘s second administration has abandoned traditional conservative principles.
While speaking to NBC’s Kristen Welker, Pence stated that he believes there is no “question about the president’s popularity.”
“I give him all the credit in the world for the hold that he has on Republican voters,” the former vice president said of Trump.
“But I maintain to you that it’s because of the president’s commitment to take on the radical left in our four years, and ever since.”
“But I think what’s lesser known right now is the way the second Trump administration has departed from the conservative agenda that we governed on, the conservative agenda that has defined the Republican Party since the days of Ronald Reagan, and before.”
“That’s an agenda of American leadership, limited government, free market economics, the right to life, and on a number of those issues the president’s been good.”
Despite having said this, Pence shared his belief that “Republicans would do well to take some time to reflect on what we believe again and take that messages to the American people.”
During an appearance on CBS’s Face the Nation in 2024, Pence slammed Trump for saluting the people who participated in the January 6 Capitol riot and for calling them “hostages” at his Dayton, Ohio, campaign rally.
In late April, the former vice president condemned the AI-generated images depicting Trump as Jesus Christ and demanded that he end his feud with Pope Leo XIV.
