Léon Marchand pulled off a remarkable feat by becoming the European champion in the 400m freestyle Sunday in Paris, in a competition that presented a new challenge for him.

With a time of 3 minutes, 43.14 seconds, he broke Yannick Agnel’s French record and won by 1.32 seconds over Hungary’s Oliver Papai.

The bronze medal went to Germany’s Lukas Märtens, the world record holder in the event.
