Former Attorney General Pam Bondi has been diagnosed with thyroid cancer months after being fired by President Donald Trump.

Bondi, 60, is undergoing treatment and is expected to return to Trump’s political circle through a new advisory committee focused on artificial intelligence policy, according to reports.

The former Florida attorney general was fired in April after criticism surrounding stalled investigations involving Trump’s political opponents and backlash over the Justice Department’s handling of records connected to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Thyroid cancer occurs when malignant cells develop in the thyroid gland, which sits at the base of the neck and helps regulate the body’s metabolism and hormone production. Medical experts say the disease is generally highly treatable when detected early.

According to the Mayo Clinic, the thyroid gland “makes hormones that regulate your heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature and weight.”

The disease is significantly more common among women than men. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports thyroid disorders disproportionately affect older adults and women.

Doctors are not always certain what causes thyroid cancer, though researchers have identified several risk factors. The Mayo Clinic lists radiation exposure and inherited genetic syndromes among the leading concerns. The Cleveland Clinic also cites family history, obesity and low iodine intake as possible contributing factors.

Symptoms often do not appear in the disease’s earliest stages. As the cancer progresses, patients may experience neck pain, swollen lymph nodes, difficulty swallowing or voice changes.

The Mayo Clinic says symptoms may include “increasing hoarseness,” swelling in the neck and throat pain.

Many patients first notice thyroid nodules, or small lumps in the neck. However, doctors caution that most nodules are not cancerous.

“Most nodules aren’t cancer,” the Cleveland Clinic states. “Only about 1 out of 10 thyroid nodules turns out to be cancerous.”

Treatment options typically include surgery, radioiodine therapy and targeted medications. The Cleveland Clinic notes surgery remains the most common treatment, often requiring partial or complete removal of the thyroid gland.

Doctors say survival rates are favorable for many patients diagnosed before the cancer spreads.

“Most thyroid cancers are permanently curable with treatment,” the Cleveland Clinic says. “This is especially the case if the cancer hasn’t spread to distant parts of your body.”

Bondi has not publicly commented on her diagnosis. Trump also had not issued a public statement as of Wednesday night.

Bondi became one of Trump’s most visible allies during his presidency and remained closely tied to his political operation after leaving office. She served as a defense attorney during Trump’s first impeachment trial and frequently appeared on cable news programs defending the administration’s legal positions.

Her expected return to a Trump-linked advisory role suggests she plans to remain active in Republican politics while continuing treatment.

Bondi was highly criticized for handling the release of the Jeffrey Epstein files.
